How Do You Know If A Position or A Company is Right for You?

When an organization extends an offer of employment, it can be exciting and a little bit scary. It is tempting to accept an offer immediately, especially if that offer involves a significant pay increase. However, a job is about more than just a paycheck. Before saying yes, you have to decide if the both position and the organization will align with what you’re looking for from your career.

What is the Company Culture?

If you work for a company that does not align with your values and personality, you won’t be happy. While this seems like a bit of a “no brainer,” many candidates fail to take this into consideration when accepting a job offer. Throughout the interview process, ask questions to help you gauge what it will be like to work for the company: How are promotions meted out? Is the environment one of teamwork or competition? Do you have flexibility in your schedule? How often is formal feedback given? Questions like these can help you determine whether or not you would thrive in the company culture.

Find Out What Led to the Job Opening

If a positon has been newly created thanks to a departmental expansion, it’s a good sign that a company is growing. If, on the other hand, you’d be the fifth developer to hold this particular position in the last two years, it could be a red flag. It is appropriate to ask the question, though you may not always get a direct answer. If the employer avoids the subject, it’s a good sign that something is amiss, and you may want to reconsider.

Have They Put it in Writing?

Many organizations – especially small startups – will wine and dine candidates, promising them great things in order to get them to sign on the dotted line. If you find yourself in such a situation, ask for those promises in writing. If the company is serious about hiring you, it shouldn’t be an issue. If; however, they say they cannot put those promises on paper, you should probably continue your job search.

Will You be Using Your Talents?

We work best when we are able to use our talents. If your new position utilizes your talents and strengths, you’ll probably be happy. If, however, much of the job consists of engaging in tasks that don’t play to your strengths, you will probably be unsatisfied in the new position.

While it can be tempting to accept a position based upon a shiny salary and benefits package, you have to be certain that both the position and the organization are a good fit for you.
