A Look Back: The Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in Orlando

B62

The annual Gartner Symposium/ITxpo is a series of events held around the world, and the U.S. symposium was held this past October in Orlando. Members of the tech community view this event as one of the most important gatherings of CIOs and IT executives each year. Over 6,000 IT professionals and senior executives attended this year’s symposium, which included discussion forums, a provider expo, networking events, lectures, breakout sessions, and daily keynote addresses.

At the event, Garner made some predictions for IT organizations and users for 2015 and beyond. The top ten predictions they made were:

  1. By 2018, digital business will require 50 percent less business process workers, but 500 percent more key digital workers.
  2. In 2015, the highest-value IPOs will be among companies that successfully combine digital markets with logistics, challenging legacy business paradigms.
  3. Smart machines and managed service offerings will reduce the cost of business operations by 30 percent by 2018.
  4. World life expectancy will increase by 0.5 years thanks to mass adoption of advanced health monitoring technology.
  5. Mobile digital assistants will continue to improve, generating a $2 billion increase in online shopping over the next three years.
  6. Mobile commerce revenue will make up 50 percent of all digital commerce revenue in the United Sates by 2017.
  7. Business models will begin to shift as organizations begin to rely on unstable processes that have been purposely created to shift based upon changing customer needs.
  8. By the end of 2015, expect more than half of all consumer products to have native digital components.
  9. 3D printing will increase in popularity, with 20 percent of durable goods retailers utilizing the technology to create highly personalized products by 2017.
  10. Internal positioning systems will be used to target in-store messaging by retailers. Gartner predicts that retailers utilizing this technology will see a five percent increase in sales.

Additional information about the happenings at the 2014 Symposium/ITxpo can be found on Gartner’s website.

The changes and predictions made at the expo indicate that mobile options and advancements will continue to play a huge role in the way businesses utilize technology in the foreseeable future. Organizations of all sizes and across all industries must be prepared to not only manage these changes, but to capitalize on them, as well. That means having a strong IT team in place that will help drive innovation.
