Taking classes, achieving professional certifications, and earning degrees shows not only initiative, but a desire to grow in your career. If you don’t have the time in your schedule to commit to classes, look into attending a professional conference or two. Employers will often foot the bill for some or all of the fees associated with continuing education.
Work Well With Your Teammates
In order to show your boss that you’re ready to accept more responsibility, you have to demonstrate the ability to get along with your co-workers under all sorts of circumstances. Leaders have to deal with people diplomatically, and if you are unable to work patiently and pleasantly with your peers, you won’t be able to become an effective manager one day. Even if you don’t want to move into management, respect for co-workers demonstrates maturity and responsibility.
Volunteer for Projects
When new projects come into your department, step up and volunteer to work on them. You may not always get what you want, but the fact that you raise your hand and show willingness to tackle the projects will catch your supervisor’s attention.
Ask For the Work
No matter how much you do to try and illustrate your readiness for more responsibility, you can’t expect your boss to assume that you want it. You must be clear about your intentions and ask your boss for what you want. Being clear does not mean demanding more work, however. Schedule a time to meet with your supervisor to express your sincere desire to take on more. Remember, you are making a request, not a demand. Be open to any feedback your boss gives you about your readiness and remember that more responsibility does not equal a new job title or pay raise.
